Tobacco Treatment in Adolescent and Young Adult Populations

Course Description:
This course is designed for both healthcare and non-healthcare professionals who work with youth and young adults who would like a deeper and more practical understanding of the problem of tobacco use among young people, and opportunities to prevent and treat tobacco use and its sequelae. Grounded in a developmental framework, the course will explore the neurobiological and neurodevelopmental underpinnings of tobacco use and addiction among youth, the physiological and broader health impacts of use, the current prevalence of use and opportunities for community-based prevention, and essential clinical skills and resources involved in treating tobacco use disorders at the point of care, including behavioral and medication treatments.

This training is designed for physicians, physician assistants, nurses, nurse practitioners, and pharmacists who work with smoking cessation medications and would benefit from an understanding of the current research guiding smoking cessation pharmacotherapy, including approaches to varenicline use that maximize efficacy and minimize side effects; use of combination medication treatment and adaptive treatment; use of extended pre- and post-quit medications, and more.

Mindfulness Training for Smokers *FACILITATOR TRAINING*

This NEW training course will provide the foundation you need to facilitate the Mindfulness Training for Smokers intervention in your own practice setting. Using experiential methods, you will gain insights into the principles of mindfulness and learn how to apply them effectively to manage the unique challenges that smokers face during their journey to quit.

Tobacco Cessation Program Implementation

Course Description:
This interactive session will guide participants through the development of a tobacco cessation program in their setting. This will be presented alongside real-world examples from Duke Health. Through this course, participants will learn how to identify key steps in establishing a tobacco cessation service and common barriers and begin to develop a plan to create or enhance tobacco cessation services at participants’ sites of practice.

Intensive Behavioral Health Approaches to Tobacco Treatment

Course Description:
Through experiential training methods, participants will be able to demonstrate how to use a variety of behavioral interventions, including motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioral therapy, and mindfulness approaches. Participants will also learn how implementing skills training and social support strategies into tobacco treatment can improve behavioral counseling outcomes.

About the Duke-UNC Tobacco Treatment Specialist Training Program
The Duke-UNC Tobacco Treatment Specialist Training Program is a collaboration of three leaders in tobacco treatment, education, and research--the Duke Smoking Cessation Program, the University of North Carolina Tobacco Treatment Program, and the North Carolina Division of Public Health--and has been making TTS education accessible to medical, behavioral and public health professionals in North Carolina and beyond since 2016.
The primary aim of the program is to train health professionals to provide evidence-based treatment for tobacco use and dependence. Our comprehensive tobacco treatment specialist training and intensive CE Short Courses provide an impactful education experience for a wide variety of professionals, including clinicians, nurses, pharmacists, social workers, public health policy-makers, and more.
