About the Course

This course will equip participants to care for pregnant and postpartum patients using tobacco products. It will discuss the incidence and risk factors for smoking during pregnancy, provide tips for assessment and counseling on the health harms of tobacco use for mother and baby, and discuss current evidence-based recommendations for treatment (behavioral and pharmacologic). This course will also train learners to address tobacco use and relapse during the postpartum period, including education on secondhand smoke, risk factors for relapse, and the impact of smoking on lactation. This course includes video lectures, knowledge check questions, and patient case study scenarios.


Learning Objectives:


  • Understand prevalence of tobacco use among pregnant women

  • Discuss the health effects of smoking on the mother and infant during pregnancy, lactation, and postpartum

  • Discuss the risks of secondhand smoke during pregnancy and postpartum for mother and infant

  • Review treatment recommendations for women using tobacco during pregnancy, including evidence-based behavioral and pharmacotherapy approaches

  • Understand factors leading to relapse during the postpartum period and identify evidence-based recommendations for treatment

  • Apply knowledge to a case study following a patient from pre-conception through postpartum.
